Pet Memorial Stone Often, the passing of a family pet is a child's first introduction to death. Children may react a number of different ways. The attitudes of the parents, combined with the family's approach to the memorial ritual--or lack thereof-- can have a profound impact on young children. Most child psychiatrists believe in dealing gently but frankly about the facts of death. Acknowledging the sadness of the occasion is appropriate. And although we may be tempted to "soften the blow," most experts agree it's unwise to pretend a pet has simply "run away." This can lead to an extended grief period, and an unrealizable expectation that the pet might one day return. One of the best ways to help a child have closure is the enacting of special rituals. Having a memorial service in which the children participate can be very healing. Many families choose to read the story "Rainbow Bridge" at this time, and ask children to mention a couple of the things they loved most about their pet. At Turkey Hollow Pet Memorials, we feature two designs that may help make these rituals as non-threatening as possible. Shaped like a giant bone or a giant paw print, these brightly colored, oversized garden stones have the power to make children smile as time goes by. Also, their whimsical shape may suggest to some children that memorials are about remembering the good things and the fun times, not the opposite. If you have any questions about these, or any other of our products, please don't hesitate to contact as 1-866-494-1965. |
